Soaring Over California Biomes

The movie is currently too big. I have to find a smaller version to post.

post iVIE update

I worked on 2 movies, Soaring Over California Biomes and the Kinder Gators, Read, Write and Romp in the Swamp. Soaring got nominated for iVIE, got a special Rec for Special Effects, and Kinder Gators did not get a nom. I also entered them in the EYMF, and both are nominated. Crossing my fingers! (I also did one with my daughter Isabel for the individual category. Very cute) This is the shorter 3 min video entered for EYMF. Title's not as cute as the original. We had to cut out some songs that are awfully cute.

movie updates

The Kinder movie will be filmed completely on next Tuesday. I have had to change the focus because I actually read the iVIE categories-duh. So we are focusing on the Code of Conduct and how they help us (Kindergartners) get into College. We started with what they were going to be when they finished college. Very cute, but boring for 20 kids. Also, amazing how many kinders can't speak clearly or loud enough.

Also with the 4th grade movie, I am excited to report that I figured out a way to show close ups of animals, etc. WE will have a "screen in the seatback in front of you." Just like on some airplanes. We also have to emphasize ecosystems and not the geography for 4th grade. Editing of the voice over script to take out the recreation and industry info. But with that we need to find pics we can use of the animals.

Kinder Gators

We have a kindergarten class that has been adopted by Florida University-the Gators. They do everything Gator and college bound. It is soooo cute. So my second movie is working with them to make a college bound theme movie. Never underestimate the power of cute kindergartners.

I am guiding them through the writing process right now-although I had to stop for 4 weeks because MAPs testing. So I'm charging up my camera and will be in their room soon.

Soaring over California Geography

Inspired by California Adventures' Soaring Over California ride, we will be using aerial footage of California provided by my brother along with stock footage to tell about California Geography. The kids will be writing the script and also acting as the flight attendants, pilots, and voice overs.

These are the rough story boards.
I can't seem to upload more than one page at a time.

Keepers of the Wild

This is our entry for the California Student Media Festival. It is a documentary about elephant conservation efforts in Africa by the San Diego Wild Animal Park personnel. (This was also our iVIE entry and will be our EYMF entry)

The Human Elephant Conflict

OK-I did something wrong-got to find the 2nd page.
VERY roughSince I know the wife of the trainer in charge of elephants at the WAP, I thought I would exploit this relationship to its fullest. (Thanks, Melissa) A group of students (who ever shows up after school) interview Jeff Andrews about his work with Elephant conservation in Africa. The script here will only include the questions from students and some basic knowledge I have gleaned so far in my discussions with Jeff. The photos are from Jeff's camera from his last trip to Africa about 2 years ago, and a from a CD he gave me of previous trips. The photos are amazing, the issue so important to not just the people of Africa, but the World, I feel a bit overwhelmed with the topic and hope I can do it justice.

This is oh so rough since I have not been working with the group of kids that will do this. Hopefully today!

Open Your Eyes to Hunger

A PSA for iVIE and the San Diego Food Bank. The prompt was how to organize a food drive, so my video club kids did it. They did an awesome job, with the food drive and the PSA.

Oops-need to compress!

Kinder Rules Final copy for iVIE

iVIE SubmissionWell, knock me upside the head with a 2 by 4. All I needed to do was adjust the exposure setting on the camera. duh. It was fine and then not. So I guess some one played with it and I didn't notice. It would have made this project even nicer. Tell me Monday what needs work, cuz its getting burned Monday night.

Kinder Rules!

This is my movie with Isabel's class at LR Green. My principal let me take personal time to work in Mrs. Winkle's classroom for this. It was a very educating experience for me to make a movie with Kindergartners. "Here, go memorize these lines.""But I don't read" Hummmm, there's a work around I hadn't thought of. Its all about scaffolding....
Anyway, I think its cute, its missing a few shots and voice overs and more credits.
A problem which is frustrating me is the white balance, I guess. The light in each room was so different and its whiter in the computer than the camera. Some scenes are totally blown out. I really need a new camera, and some warm cards.
I'd love some constructive criticism.

iREAD Garageband Project

My proposal is to have a Readers Theater with the third grade class I am working with. We have plenty of books stored in a Title VII cabinet somewhere, but I need to search. It would end up kind of like a radio show, with sound effects and jingles. We would need to use the teacher's laptop, or maybe have groups of kids work on desktops and then join the projects together on the teacher's laptop. Since almost all of our kids are English Learners, this is excellent practice for pronunciation and fluency.
I get to be the consultant and extra teacher in the room, so management is not so much an issue, except, I don't have control over the schedule and can only come in when they can make time for me.

Kinder Rules!

This is the rough draft story board for the movie I am making with my daughter's Kinder classroom at LR Green. We are making a movie for all following classes so that they can learn the 6 rules of Kindergarten, the heart rule, the clock rule, the bunny rule, the bear rule, the turtle rule, and the elephant rule. This process helps me to realize how I need to change it up. All the rules look the same. A chaotic class and one kid (in costume) following the rule. We need to re-think some scenes.

Kinder High Frequency Words-for iPodHere is my first try. Please give feedback! This quicktime is formatted for iPod.
Is my voice to stern? Is the speed OK? Black on white is supposed to be best on eyes. Is the transition distracting?
Thanks for any comments.

I will be making 'movies' of High Frequency words by grade level. I plan on using keynote and recording my voice and then exporting to quicktime and posting them for downloading. These 'movies' can be viewed on line, or in iTunes, or on an iPod.

Being able to read high frequency words fluently releases the brain to work on more cognitively demanding tasks such as comprehension.

Red Threads: Weaving Families Together from Two Countries

Melissa Belshee and I worked on this documentary created from video clips I had from our family trip to China to adopt our daughter, Isabel.
Melissa researched chinese adoptions and wrote the script. She then searched my video footage (almost 3 hours of it!) for visuals that would enhance the story.

Divine Comprehension

I can't seem to compress the whole movie small enough. This is only one part of it. I didn't realize when I went to compress it that I had 2 projects open, the summary scene and the whole movie. That's why I uploaded the wrong one.

I would appreciate any feedback on the piece you can see, as it was not nominated and I thought it was a shoe-in. I must have missed the mark completely on what is good video. You would think after all these years I would have it figured out.

Project Information
Planned Entry Title:  Divine Comprehension
Estimated Length:  5 min.
Grade Level:   3-5

Purpose and Educational Objectives (delete those that are not your choice)
Purpose (include one To inform    To entertain   To persuade   To document
Audience (include as many as apply)  students  teachers   parents   general audience  Other  _______

Educational Objective: In 50 words or less, explain the learning or teaching objective(s) for this entry.
Since the whole district in Escondido has an educational focus of comprehension, so I thought our movie should focus on the strategies students are learning in class. This will help the students creating the movie learn them and when the movie is played in class, it will help other students remember to use them, also.

Story Description: Describe your movie such that is detailed enough to create a strong mental picture of what your movie intends to portray so that Project LIVE teachers reviewing your "movie" can give you useful feedback.
There are 2 angels that appear on kids' shoulders when they are having problems understanding text. Situations include pleasure reading, reading for a research project, working together for a class project (CA missions), and fictional reading. The angels appear and tell a little poem to help the student remember which reading (comprehension) strategy to use, such as Monitor and Clarify, Questioning, etc.

Special Details: Describe special efforts you have put into any technical areas (titles, lighting, sound, angles, etc.) that will make your film look more polished.

We will be editing totally in FCP, we have used a boom mic, we are using lighting for the green screen with the angels, I always use Live Type because it is so easy and so cool. I have been really trying to remember all the possible angles and get plenty of B roll.
