One day there was a weird animal no one even thought it was an animal. One day the animal was trapped in a cage and tied down with rope. No one wanted to help it. Except a girl who was the prettiest girl in town. So she untangled it and helped him. Then she dicided to take care of the weird thing. One day the thing transformed into a handsome, young man. Every single girl wanted to be with him. The handsome man only wanted to be with the girl who saved him. 

Project 2 Reflection

When I look back at my vision of this project, I realize now that it was too much work. I wanted to cover too many reading strategies in one project. Therefore, I decided to cut the project back and minimize the final product by including the questioning and summarizing strategies. The students used the Story Kit application and wrote a small summary of the story by including a beginning, middle, and end, one for each picture they used. The students then added a question to each picture. The students actually had a hard time coming up with a question. In the beginning, the students even put questions they already knew the answer to. After rerecording, the students had to find someone in the class to answer their questions.

On another note, I realize that it is very important that I create an editing checklist that the students need to use before they press publish on the ipod. My students love seeing the finished product so much that they rush through the process and make really simple errors. I really need to work on getting my students to slow down and enjoy the process.

ipods Help Improve Reading Comprehension

With this project, the students will recreate a story from their reading series using the application, "Story Kit." The story that they will use is called "The Last Dragon." The students will copy photos into the Story Kit application and then write a small summary of the story (with beginning, middle and end) under each photo. The students will also make predications and add a voice recording. This voice recording will cover the reading strategy, questioning. The students will be required to ask questions about the story or characters using the "Questioning for Understanding Relationships." The students can also include statements such as, the main idea of the story or their opinion of the story. I am very excited to introduce this application to my students because many of the reading strategies are covered in such an enjoyable way. Thank you to the person who opened my eyes to this application.

So, when Maria goes home her mom and dad are so excited about the pagaent. When she went to bed she felt like she was traped in a spiders web. The next day went to school, the teacher said to take out there jounals and to write what there biggest wish was. And Maria wrote I wish I could make a snowman, and to save Wilbur and to be in the pagaent , and to be called Maria Isabel. Then the teacher said Maria Isabel you may be in the pagaent. And Maria was so happy. So at the end of the she went very happy. And when she got home her father gave her pretty barettes for her hair. And she sang her favorite Hanukkah song. The End!!!

California Regions Postcard Project

I am absolutely pleased with this project. The students enjoyed learning about the different regions of California and, I know they loved creating their own postcards from that region. This project took longer than expected, but was well worth it.

As a whole I am satisfied with the process of this project, but I would change a few things. First, I had the students write their postcard initially on a paper template. Then, my next step, should of been to have the students blog the postcards while in the classroom on their ipods so that they didn't waste precious computer lab time just typing. Secondly, I would have spent more time on each region separately. I taught all of the regions first, then I had the students work on all of the postcards. Doing each postcard separately would have helped me with assessment.

The final part of the project, after the typing was completed, was to use "audio recorder" to record their postcards. This part of the project was simple for the students, except for the ones who want perfection. The sample I used is a student who goes to speech therapy on a weekly basis. He is aware of the problems that he has with his speech and really takes his time when talking. I loved hearing him practicing his lines.

I know that the fourth grade students learned important Social Studies standards from this lesson. In turn, I would have other grade levels specifically 3rd-5th do this postcard project, but use proper grade level standards. For example, 5th graders could write from different states in the United States and 3rd graders could write from different places in Escondido. The teachers would have to change the pictures and the wording, but the project could remain similar. This project definitely can be modified to meet the needs of many students. I will certainly have my students do this again next year.

My First Blog

Today the students officially learned how to use iblogger. Mrs. Peterson's class came over to the classroom to help my students. It was a bit hectic, but it was worth it. Right now we are all blogging and it is very quiet in here. I can't wait to read all of the blogs. This will be a great online journal.

California Regions Keynote Project

4th Grade California Regions Postcard Keynote Project

In this project, students will create a nine slide Keynote presentation of California’s four major regions. This template was created over the summer by Heather Peterson. The first slide will consist of a title page and each different page will have a picture slide representing the region and after this slide, there will be a picture slide and a postcard slide where students can write to their families. The students will finish the project by adding transitions and recording their voices. I chose this project because it will help in comprehending one of our main Social Studies standards, the California Regions. Also, this project covers many writing standards. I know that the students will enjoying creating the keynote.

Since this project covers a very important fourth grade social studies standard, the students must comprehend the major information that they will read about the four regions in their social studies book first. This project will aid in comprehension because the students will have to look back in their social studies books and reread to find information for the keynote presentation. The students will also have to monitor and clarify their work with the notes they will have taken on their ipod touch. Finally, The students will create the keynote presentation to show visually, that they have comprehended the information. The voice over will be a final way for the students to share their learned information.

Where in the World Keynote Project

This is an example of the original blog I posted called, Where in the World Do I Live? Keynote presentation that the students created with slides, voice over, and transitions. As for the process, this project was completed in steps. First, they completed their writing, editing their work with a partner. It's amazing that students still forget what state and city they live in. This is a great reminder for the students and is a help to the second language learners. For the second step, the students added their pictures to go along with their work. Next, the students added the transitions. The learning process here was making sure that the students added enough time for each transition. Also, they needed to be prepared that the transition time should allow for voice over. The voice over was the last and final piece of this product. I really liked using this as an introduction to Keynote and I believe that this idea could be used in any grade level starting at third grade. What I did change already was adding the voice over. The original lesson did not have voice over. Also, if I was teaching fifth grade, I may add more info. on a specific state in the United States. Basically I would modify the lesson to meet the needs of each grade level.

Social Studies-Where in the World I Live

Students will create a keynote presentation that involves seven slides. The students will explain where they live in the planet, hemisphere,  continent, state, county, city, and school. They copy and paste pictures from the common folder, add transitions, and finally they will add voice over (voice recording). This is a perfect project for second language learners who tend to mix up where they live. The students love this project and are very motivated to learn. This is also a great introduction to keynote.
