The Non-Profit ZAP!

This project will be a compilation of five 30-second segments produced by different 5th grade groups. The segments will be produced in the likeness of our favorite educational TV show, "The Electric Company." We have been watching online episodes at http://pbskids.org/electriccompany/ and have selected 5 of our favorite segments to recreate. We are having tryouts next week, followed by rough draft submissions on December 17th.

Aliens are Invading my Dream - In the Can

Final version of our 2010 iVie submission in the 3-5 Math & Science category. My original film squad, now in 5th grade, worked harder than ever to get it done in time. Animations were created with both Keynote and Frames. The video game music scores and sound effects were created with the NESynth iPod app. We used a 2-jack connector that ran from iPod headphone output to computer audio input and recorded live with Garageband. Then we exported each of the audio pieces to iTunes for easy placement in iMovie.

Rough Cut Submission

We are only about 1/2 way through editing our film. The reason... my students decided they were not done filming yet. They went out and filmed a funny little alien-themed intro to this movie. Despite my concerns that too many themes might confuse the audience, they insisted that a good film needs a strong hook. They actually did a great job integrating their new ideas with the existing story.

What you will see: A Star-Wars-like preface, followed by some aliens zooming around in their spaceship looking for someone who is about to fall asleep, then zooming into their consciousness. Student fights sleep while his teacher is giving a math lesson. He enters a dream state, along with his alien stowaways, and must solve division problems to make his way through.

What is still in the works: The first person shooter image within the video game. 3 more short division problems and 1 long division problem (final boss). Funny picture-in-picture alien commentary. Student waking up. Aliens commenting on how "humans are soooo weird!" Also no music, sound effects, or ending credits.

Story Board for Project 1 (2010)

Download file "Divide and Conquer.pdf"

My team of videographers (now in 5th grade) wanted to create a film in the style of a video game. We plan on creating the action in the video game sequences using builds in Keynote. We will be taking still shots in front of a green screen to create characters. We might also integrate some clay characters (or clay bodies with huge realistic photo heads). Not a lot of dialogue, but a lot of cool sound effects, and good modeling of easy and long division math problems.

Clay Animation Summarization - Final Draft of IVIE Entry

My previous post was too rough to do this film justice. This is the version I submitted to the IVIE Festival.

SUMMARHYME

Still kind of rough. Will be adding more lyrics, a lot more chromakey, titles, credits, and some additional footage of students working with film. The robot dance sequences will be tighter, more stylized, and condensed to make room for additional footage. Hope this is enough to get a good feel for my 09 IVIE entry.

Storyboard for IVIE entry '09

Think...music video mixed with interview sound bytes between verses. While I greatly value detailed planning for films, this film has brought me in a different direction. Since much of this film relies on interviews regarding events that are pending, some details are omitted in regards to script and detailed shot list.

Download file "Hip Hop Summary Film.pdf" <----This is the storyboard.

Download file "Setting Lyrics.pdf"<----My film is a bit avant-garde, so this is the closest thing that I have to a script. Lyrics to other verses will be posted as they are collaboratively created by my 4th grade Anytime School class.

An Alien Made Me Wireless!

This film will serve as my first IVIE entry. It is a math movie that reviews place value and teaches students to convert four digit numbers from standard form into expanded form.
