Radio Theater Write-up

Rewriting stories as a readers theater was a new experience for my students. Some enjoyed it and, naturally, others did not. Students were then given the choice to use their script for a Garageband project or not. All students, however, were required to work on one of the Garageband projects. All the students enjoyed this aspect and in fact, most students worked on two projects.

This project was a great success and we will probably attempt one more this year or perhaps it will be an option that students may select. However, we learned several things. One: Don’t assume the version in the lab is the version on the classroom computers! This presented quite a headache. Two: We somehow need to find a quiet area in which to record. Our projects are flooded with background noises.

Project 3-Radio Theater

Visualization

Radio Theater

Earlier in the year students wrote sequels to the children’s book “The Secret Shortcut”. For this project, students rewrote their sequel as a radio theater play. Students were to try to create visual images with words for their audience.

In the lab, students recorded their plays or worked on someone else’s play on Garage band. Later sound effects were recorded to accompany the play. Students greatly enjoyed the project.

Inferences write up

2nd project:

We have been working on making inferences in 5th grade classes. So far most of our practice has been such that we read a passage and I help them come to an inference. Then as a small group, a pair, and finally alone students find clues in the reading to support their inference. Additionally, they add some personal knowledge that has also helped them come to their inference.

Students read “Yang the Second and Her second Admirer. At several sections in the story we stopped to come to an inference. The 2 selected recordings were from the same section and the same inference.

The children were successful on this activity. “Yang...” is the second selection in which we have completed this recorded activity on Mobile Studio. I, however, have had difficulty. We never could locate the first recorded inferences from a previous story. On this selection I could only locate 2. Hopefully I will become more successful.

Had difficulties down loading the second Mobile Studio file. Will try again tomorrow. Yes, I do realize it is me.

Inferences

We continue to work on identifying inferences. In previous lessons I have made inferences and pointed out clues that led me to that conclusion. In this lesson students will begin by sharing what they recall about inferences and how they are similar and different from predictions. Then we will read aloud a teacher selected paragraph from the story "Mariah Keeps Cool". I will make an inference and identify the clues that led me to that conclusion. We will then read a different paragraph aloud. Students discuss what inference might be made. As a class we will decide on an inference. Then in groups students will decide what clues led them to that inference. They, as a group of 4-5, will record the influence and what clues led them to make it.

Keynote Pitch

Sign of the Beaver

Change over time

In this project students will study the two main characters in Sign of the Beaver, Matt and Attean. Specifically students will be looking at both boys’ emotional growth and how they change through the novel.
Throughout the beginning, middle, and end of the book, students will take notes on the two boys and discuss their findings with other students.Discussion with their peers, guided by teacher prompts, will increase comprehension.

Using their notes they will write a paragraph about each of the boys at that stage of the book. They will also compare and contrast the boys.

Their final copy of these paragraphs will be placed on a keynote presentation with their illustrations. Students will record themselves reading their paragraphs.

Extension- on an additional card students may use their knowledge of the character to predict what the future might hold or Matt and Attean.
