Project 3 Proposal

I like to have the kids read a variety of genres. One of the ones we spent time on was biographies. We also have a focus on biographies in HM. The kids read a biography and took an AR test on it. After reading, they made a time line of their person's life. They also drew a picture of the person. They wrote a summary of the person's life . I was trying to figure out how we could get the picture and the recording of the person's life on their ipods when Tom sent the email about Sonic Pics. It was perfect. The kids took pictures of their drawings and then recorded their writing. They were on their desks for Open House. The kids had their parents listen to the recordings. Comprehension strategies and skills were summarize, main idea and details. Now, I just have to figure out how to get their work on my blog.

Predict and Validate

One our straategies to improve reading comprehension is to make predictions before we read and then to verify if their predictions were accurate. The kids have been making predictions before reading each of the selections in their HM anthogies. We have been alternating between blogging and recording the predictions. After reading the selection the kids get with partners and either read or listen to their predictions to see if the story supported what they were thinking. The students are learning that it is ok to have predictions that are not correct but that they need to make smart predictions based on the information in the text before they read.

iread project two

We have a routine of recording a preview our HM selections on the ipod. I will be using these recordings as my project. The kids are doing predictions and wonderings before they read.

Keynote

I have changed my project to a summary of one of the stories ( The Talking Cloth ) in our anthology. The students are writing a summary of a couple of pages, illustrating it and recording the summary.

NWEA Vocabulary

The purpose of this project is for the kids to make slides to teach vocabulary necessary to improve their MAPS scores. Each student will make 3 slides. The slides will show the word, definition, sentence, and a picture. Kids will do voice overs of the written text. I am getting the vocabulary from the MAPS DesCartes.

We Love It

This is my final project for this year. We had a lot of fun... The kids did most of the filming, picked the music, and set up and took down equipment. We didn't try anything new--it was fun practicing the things we learned during the year.

Rounding

I am afraid this is a very rough draft-we are working everyday so it should improve in the next week. We have been working on the audio but all of it needs work. Voice overs will be added. We also have additional clips and effects--the kids are having a blast--I am a wreck-we are also making a video of the process and are bloopers.

The Test

I am working with 9 third and fourth grade students after school (MTW) on this project--we were just able to begin working on January 5--so this is subject to change. I want them to use their ideas and this was what we came up with in three days.

The Test

Shot of classroom door
Bell Rings/kids leaving
Two kids talking--We have a test tomorrow--I always mess up--I just don't get rounding.
3rd student--It's easy--let me show you

Voice over-rounding poem (If the number to the right is 5 or more the number goes up for sure--If the number to the right is 4 or less the number goes up and you can rest.

Student Teaching at chalkkboard Voice Over-Draw a house around tens--look at the number to the right--does it go up or stay the same.
Remember the words of squeeky mouse--only zeros follow the house.
Now you try it.
Shot of two kids rounding numbers-
Classroom door/bell rings/kids come out
Two kid look at their tests/close up 100%

Now I Get It

The purpose of this video is to show the importance of apostrophes in getting meaning from text.

You Can't Manage Without Apostrophes!

This will illustrate the importance of the apostrophe (the flying comma) in reading for meaning. I will include the same sentences with apostrophes in different places with Illustrations (not quite sure of how I will do the illustrations) maybe kids as models or drawing. The sentences will probably be on sentence strips. Plan to have voice overs to give the rules.  This ties in with our third grade language arts standards.
