Project 2 Reflection - Science Summaries

For my 2nd project, I choose 3rd grade science, using GarageBand. The introduce the GargeBand project, we did an example togther using the following steps.

  • Choose topic
  • Use a Flow Map to summarize topic
  • Find internet pictures to support my topic
  • Turn summary into a script
  • Put it all together using GarageBand
After we created a Science Summary using GarageBand, the students got into groups of 2. Next, they were to look over Chapter 2 (Adaptations in Land Environment) and 3 (Adaptations in Water Environments) from their science book and choose a lesson they wanted to summarize. Finally, they followed the above steps to create their own GarageBand. For the past 3 weeks, my students have looked forward to science. They really enjoyed doing this type of work. At first they thought it was going to be a lot of work, but as they progressed, they understood the reasoning behind the order of the above steps.

At present, I only have 1 group project to post. Most of the groups are about 75% done. As a whole I feel this project went pretty smoothly. I have a mobile lab in my classroom, so all partner groups were able to have their own computer. There were times when, eventhough they were working in partner groups, I still did some whole class teaching. For example, when the majority were ready to start putting their pictures in GarageBand, I set up a projector and guided them through the process. The only frustration I have found is the actual uploading process. I transfered the GarageBand file on to my laptop from the classroom laptop and couldn't open it because the version on the classroom laptops is older than my laptop. So, inorder to upload this file, I had to access the actual laptop. Other than that, I will definately repeat this project with them using Social Studies.

Please see below for the GarageBand project I'm uploading:

Project 2 - Summarizing

For my 2nd project, the content area I have chosen is Science, using Summarizing as the Comprehension Strategy. The end project will be put into GarageBand, using the students voices (summarizing animal adaptation - 3rd grade), pictures downloaded from the internet and sounds found in GarageBand.

Project 1: Raising Dragons (Segment 1)- Question Strategy

This project is created to be used for 3rd grade students. I decided to use the Questioning Strategy due to a previous lesson where I found my students could read a question and tell the type of question it is (Right There, Think and Search, Author and Me or On My Own), but had a very hard time writing one of those types of questions. In my project, I had groups of partners. One set of partners read a page from Raising Dragons, a 3rd grade story in HM. After reading that page, they discussed the type of question they wanted to use, then picked a starter sentence to help them create their question. After the questions were created, I had another group of partners answer the questions. Each group of partners read a page from Raising Dragons, then discussed their answer and wrote it down. With my help, they recorded their answer in Garage Band. I then drag and dropped the sound bite into Keynote. Attached is my project
