Positive Action; Courage

Students have created a Positive Action skit that we use in assemblies as cooperative groups throughout the year. This group of students created the script for this movie, casted it, brought in costumes and assigned a student to do the video taping and sound. After importing the footage into iMovie they reshot some shots and edited in teams.

Pourquoi Tales

Students wrote Pourquoi tales in teams and created a podcast of their stories. We read Pourquoi tales as a part of our grade level curriculum and checked out other books from the library. Students listened to examples of even more stories as a read-a-loud. They blogged 5 questions from nature that they could think of as their
own tale. They then wrote their own stories. Students switched papers, edited and practiced reading stories outloud to each other using expression. They then decided on a story that the team would use in a podcst and illustrated a picture to go with the story. Students were shown as a class how to do a podcast on the projector. They then went to a quiet place to do their work.

Positive Action Courage

Four students wrote the script for the Positive Word of the week, "courage". They decided to bring costumes and use the idea of the Wizard of Oz. As we were writing the script, they were planning their costumes and screen shots.

Project Three: Porquoi Tales

QUestioning Strategy

Students will read several different Porquoi Tales from their text and from the library. After reading the stories, they will develop questions matching the Porquoi Tale style, which they will choose one question to write the answer to for their own Porquoi Tale. Students may work as a team or alone to develop a script for a podcast including illustrations, music, and sound effects.

Positive Action Integrity

Our class demonstrated the Positive action word of the week. We weekly write scripts and film the word of the week. We edit in co-operative groups.

Audio Project

Maria Isabel

Using the story Maria Isabel, I plan to read with a small group from the story. We will stop at intervals where students will predict and infer from what was read giving details for why they believe their prediction will happen. I plan to develop a chart with questions to help students focus their answers and record if their predictions were correct. I will train one child from each group to download the audio files in the computer from voice memos. I set up student smart play lists. I will train the student downloading to name the files from each iPOD at once so that they are loaded into their smart playlists and then delete the recordings.

Positive Action - Respect

Each table group writes a script to demonstrate the Positive Action Word of the week.
They start by pitching an idea that illustrates the word. They list the characters plot and the setting.
I choose from the ideas or put together those that are the strongest and give each student a template explaining the prompt that they write a script to. They are given the word, definition, characters, setting, and plot to write a script for.
They turn in the scripts for their table group and I choose the best of and give them back a typed script.
They try out the script and give me back new revisions.
All students give story boarding a try by drawing in the frames.
When I have a parent helper, they go out of the room to practice the script.
The parent discusses the storyboard with them and they pick the best ones to cut and paste.
I have the cut and paste original storyboard, but found that students weren't thinking of all the possible screen shots. We went back and looked at the rough cut and I had them put the pictures from the clips in order in pages and describe the shot. Even with all this detail they missed some specifics.

Students were supposed to describe the vocabulary word as if they were talking to someone that couldn't see, like the girl in the story. Many students had trouble with this concept. They are the lower 20% of the grade level and continued to give a definition. I felt that it was a quality project, but that we needed to spend more time on using a definition to describe something.

Museum

I created a podcast from my slides in a Keynote presentation posing questions for students to answer on our field-trip.
They will bring a camera and an iPOD per group with a parent. Students practiced using the recording device in Mobile Studios before the trip I used.
I created questions from the museum wesite explaining the exhibits.
I created questions using different kinds of comprehension skills including summary, inference, questioning, evaluation and making predictions using given information.
Students will refer to the podcast for the questions and answer them during the trip by recording their responses.
Students will take pictures of the topics they are recording.
They will create a keynote when we return by groups using the same slides from the podcast.

Students will monitor and clarify their understanding of the Houghton Mifflin selection by describing vocabulary words from the story. After learning the vocabulary from the Houghton Mifflin selection of From the Shores of the Silver Lake and listening to the story with their Anthology on the computer, students will describe the vocabulary words from the story using the audio recorder and save it on a Keynote presentation with the picture that goes with the word. Because the story is about a girl who is blind traveling on a train, students will describe the words, not just define them as if they were describing them to someone that could not see.

Wildfires

After reading the story Wildfires, we discussed and wrote about the positive effects of the fire in our community.  Students read their story in the iPod iTalk application.  I had trouble getting iTalk to see 2 of my iPod's.  I was only able to attach one sample.

Gingie's Math House Gone Again

As students continue to struggle with the formulas for area perimeter and volume, we made a sequel to last year's Gingie's Math House.  Students used three programs Crazy Talk, Frames and Final cut Pro to edit video with.

Paper Dragon

Download file "dragon salma.m4a.zip"We read how to make a paper dragon in our anthology. Students wrote their own directions and made the dragon following the directions. They used images taken from the directions in the book and recorded how to make the dragon. At the end they took a picture of their dragon and put it in the podcast.
