Some final projects for 2010-2011

My 1st grade class and Mrs. Marshall's kindergarten class completed several projects this year. Because they were projects I have done similarly in the past they were not "new" projects posted to Edmodo. We also wanted to post them in a public place where the students can view them.

Can't teach without them anymore....

Well we are on week 4 of summer school and I can't teach without my ipods anymore... I have realized that. I have not used them on a daily basis this summer but we have been working with them about every other day. I have a kinder prep class and the students all knew what they were, and had no fear working with them. We have used apps for putting the letters of our name in the correct order, letter formation, letter names, some ELD, counting apps, shape apps, it has been great. The only problem I had with this age group (many are still 4 years old!) was keeping them on their apps. They want to check out all the apps, so it is a bit of a challenge keeping them on task. I think it may be beneficial to strip them down to only the apps you want them working with, but that can be time-consuming.

Sonic Pics Rules!!!

Oh we LOOOVE the Sonic Pics app! We have been completing some practice projects to get ready for our final plant project which we will be completing on Monday. We love how many different options this app has, and how easy it is to share and upload! Really it is never whether the students know how to use the technology, only how well the teacher can use it. The students figure it out faster than we can usually! We are also working with kinders on this app and will have some sample projects to post next week.

Here are a few samples from First Graders:

Project 3

Well, my head is nearing the surface again (so to say) after my life was turned upside down a few weeks ago. So I am working on catching up...

Our third project is going to be a Sonic Pics project. We are working on plants right now so we will do a project on the life cycle of plants. I think Sonic Pics will be a better choice for primary level compared to Reel Director. I don't know how to attach it yet for blog posting, that will be something to practice.

Amazing Job!

Well, once again my students are showing how amazing they are! People usually don't give first graders (or kinders...) enough credit for what they are capable for. The Apple team came through last Thursday and we were fortunate to be able to show off our skills.

I have put together some project based learning assessments. Students are creating projects from a rubric which is pulling together standards from all areas of our study- Language Arts, Reading, Science, Social Studies, VAPA, and of course Technology. Just following the project sheet and checklist using multiple apps is a great accomplishment in itself for first graders. They are learning targets and stepping stones toward completing a Reel Director project at the end of the year, which is one of our goals.

I am attaching one as an example. Our next project, which the students helped to create and plan, is going to be on the Life Cycle of a Butterfly.

New Routines!!

For our second project, I am THRILLED to see we are actually using the ipods. I have already been planning some uses, so it works out perfectly. The first one is using the ipods for weekly spelling practice and spelling tests. We have been using the notepad feature for taking tests. They take the test directly on the ipod, and I can easily check them because we are a 1:1 class. The next step is doing it independently! Starting with our next theme I am recording myself reading the test, and will be posting the recordings to my google site page (which is forcing me to get it in use!) and the students will listen to the link and take the test independently. I think this will be an awesome way for them to learn some good time-management and responsibility! It will be one of their jobs to get done on Friday (and think how easy it will be for students to take a test they are absent for!) We will be getting a couple more routines in place, hopefully before break.

Testing some new apps

Well, we are constantly trying to add new apps that are free, fun, exciting, high quality, and educational. Sometimes it is hard to find apps that meet all that criteria. It was suggested that I test out some new apps that are leveled readers (LAZ Readers). They are in a full range for kinder and first, and the ones I have tested out were free. The free part was great, the educational part was great, and they are high quality. But without the "fun and exciting" even putting them on an ipod is not going to get the students to read them more than once, so I definitely won't spend money to purchase more titles. I tried offering some motivation, but the students have no desire to read them again. They have no sounds, bells, or whistles. They have no free "show" when they are done, nor do they have any moving animation. They do have decent comprehension questions at the end of each story, but most of the questions cannot be read by the students independently. When our students do a comprehension quiz on AR, they receive points for which they are awarded prizes. So the moral here is it is always better to try before you buy!

Having technical difficulties!

Well, we are having trouble with two things: getting our photos to insert into the keynotes and getting our recordings off the ipod devices and onto the keynote. I hope the techs can help me solve this at the meeting today.

Project 1, 2009

Coming up with my projects this year are a little more tricky. First of all, I am a combo, that in itself is a whole bag of worms. But I also do not want to do the same stuff just warmed over from last year. So, it took quite a bit of thought.

For our first project we are going to make Keynote projects based upon the seasons of the year. I like this one because it is in both grade level standards, combines curriculum content areas, and first grade has an anthology story soon we can directly springboard from. The big difference from last year's Keynote project is we are going to do summaries of each season, and since the iWork software has been updated in our lab we can properly use the audio component which was a challenge last year. It will be differentiated, each student (and each grade level) will be working individually at their own level, which will be evident in their summary responses.

IRead with Audio

First we did Iread comprehension tasks inputting answers into the Ipods.  Next, we learned how to record answers that are more lengthy.  We recorded summaries to our final anthology story.

IRead for Comprehension

The ipods are proving to be an invaluable tool in many ways. Nearly everyday in the first grade language arts we have quick comprehension tasks, questions, and assessments. I have been having students log in answers to some of these questions on the note pad app of the ipod. I didn't realize though that the note pad will not email as an attachment- it just sends the info in the body of an email. We completed this task last week- the first letter in their answer indicates their choice.

IRead challenges!

Well, we have been using the ipods to directly enter comprehension skill and strategy answers.  The students love it!  I found it goes quicker if I put one ipod out per answer.  Only problem- how do I upload them?  I hope to find out at the meeting tomorrow because I have tried several things.

IRead project

I have 2 ideas that I am testing out for the third project.

One- we are performing a play of Little Red Riding Hood.  I want the students to be able to read their lines from the ipods while we are still learning our lines.

Two- I want students to be able to complete comprehension recording tasks quickly with the ipods, which would also save their evidence.  For example- in a week that we are working on evaluation students could record a quick evaluation of a story (happy/sad face, thumbs up/down?).  For monitor/clarify they could enter a word they did not understand in the story, and we could review the list as a class.  We use and focus on 5 in first grade for anthology and read-aloud stories:  Question, summarize, predict, evaluate, and monitor/clarify.  We use phonics/decoding primarily just for decoding phonics library stories, unlike the other grades.

Phase 2 Garageband

Well now that we have completed phase one Keynote, we are working on the Garageband component.  This project out of the 3 is proving to be the most challenging for me as this was the software that I had the least amount of experience with.  I am hoping (let's hope it works this week!)  that we can record each student using the questioning strategy for our anthology story this week.  The questioning format this week is actually coming up with a question after a little preview of the story (almost like a prediction?).   We would then review all the questions after reading the story and actually answer them.  We'll see how this goes-

Our Projects

We have taken our Theme 5/6 writing assessments and converted them to completely digital files in the context of Reading/Writing Workshop.  These were originally "on demand" writing assessment pieces scored with rubrics.  After they were graded and recorded, we made necessary corrections and changes and put them into Keynote presentations.  The original illustrations were re-done using KidPix, and copied onto a slide of the Keynote presentation.  We are presenting them to our parents at Open House this year!

The students are absolutely thrilled at making such a professional-looking product!  They want to continue making more- we will just see how many more we can do before the end of the year.

I am attaching two of the projects for now- the rest have to be put into one file and compressed.  These two students presented their projects on Thursday April 30th at Pioneer's night at the Apple Store in North County Fair.  You would have thought they were winning academy awards they were so excited!

We are back on track!

Well, after a lot of trial and error, I think I have gotten all of this together.  Using all of this new technology has been challenging for me as well as my students!  One thing about the students though, especially in First Grade- they are FEARLESS!  If you hand them an Ipod touch, with no direction, it's guaranteed they will have something figured out in the first five minutes.  They are amazing.

I am SO excited to be participating for first grade!

The first project I will be doing will be based on Theme 5 stories.
