Project Live iVIE Submission: Math Counts!

This is our rough draft of Math Counts! for iVIE submission. Let us know how we can make it better. All suggestions are welcomed!!

I like the shot of the basketball into the hoop! Some of your sequence might be less jumpy by putting some transitions in, especially when the shots are very similar like in the tetherball scene. Either that, or make the sequence have more contrast in between clips- wide shot with a person talking, to a very close up shot.

I'm going to say it too...I like the shot of the basketball going into the hoop. Good job! Sometimes the kids went out of frame, so maybe bring them closer together or film from further back. Outside shots had good color. You might want to use some type of title or slide in between shot to emphasize each mathematical concept. Nice job!

OK, it's unanimous; I liked the hoop shot too. Several others were very interesting, too, like the feet running out to the playground. I liked the pacing; brisk without being chaotic. Great job.

Stupendous job! If everyone else knew how much your students worked on this they would be amazed! I liked the different shots as well particularly the feet going out to the playground. I did notice the background noise on some of the shots but I don't think it distracted from the spoken line. I have to agree with Suzanne about adding some kind of title or drop in to emphasize the concept taught. Fantastic!

I love the way you spelled your title with HM Sound Spelling Cards. I think you need to extend the duration of that clip - I didn't have time to read it through the first time. I also think it might give a nice effect to add a voice over during the title clip to drive it home (1 kid w/ good expression or small group: "Math Counts"). I hated the basketball clip! j.k.

I think it's clever the way your kids used sports examples to drive home the argument that "math counts". What about adding a more slides after each sports segment, using one child in close up, who defines the math concept (like angles or circumference) as the concept appears underneath as a subtitle? I don't know if you'd have time at this point, but maybe if you picked just one student, it could be done and inserted next week before submission. I think that would make the teaching end of your video even more powerful. Great acting from the kids, nice camera shots. Good work!

What a great way to show kids that they do use math everyday, even if it's not actually working out problems. Your students did a nice job of adding humor (when in the library) with the thought bubbles. I also liked the closer shots (feet, basketball). It's obvious they worked hard.

I agree with the comments on the foot shot and basketball shot. I really didn't understand that there was a title in the sound spelling cards and wondered why they were there. Great audio and articulation on the part of the actors in addition to great acting. They were very natural.

Hoop Shot ROCKS! There was a great one too, from the ground, up at the kids when they first went to follow the girl. You had some really great angles, and great sound for being outside. I loved the 'real life' examples that matter to kids this age (soccer, football, tether ball, and basketball. Grrrrrrrrrrrreat! Oh, that beginning was funny too with the captions over the bored students' heads. Kudos.

Loved the Mitchell deNeve gratuitous foot shot. Basketball shot was cool, too. Yup, the kids move out of frame sometimes and some cuts were obvious. You could put in a different angle shot between them, like a close up.
I like to see the Math concept in text to emphasize it, but I read some research that said it distracts the brain. I'm not convinced, though.
The Sound Spelling Cards would need to be on screen for a longer time to figure out what they spell. And it was hard to see-at least at this posted size.
(I'm so jealous, yours is done!)

Love the sports theme. And I'm jealous that you're this far along. I especially like the last few frames. I agree about the sound spelling cards-I couldn't read them but I'm sure you've taken care of that by now.

    Jose,
I liked the low angle shot of the kids running to the playground. I also liked the overall concept. The only thing that I think this movie needs is a "B" role shot when the girl talks to the two boys. This will hide the edit. Good job.
