Are You Ready for the Big Test?

I am so proud of my students' creation! They are such a creative group of kids. This movie was their idea, their storyboard, their script, their filming, and they completed most of the editing on their own! This is truly a kid-made movie. We have entered this movie into the iVIE Festival and hope to get nominated. We hope everyone enjoys watching our movie and is able to share it with other second grade students.

Project #2: Alligreater the Alligator

Wow! This movie was a great learning experience for my students and I. The whole concept from start to finish was completely their idea. Claymation is an amazing art form! I would totally do this again with a future class.

We began this adventure with a very solid storyboard and script. In fact, I was most impressed with my students' storyboarding and script writing. They came up with some great one liners. Their favorite was the last line, "Remember, Alligreater always thinks with his stomach." My students crack me up!

Creating our clay creature turned out being a great art lesson in sculpting. Each student created their own alligator. We studied the shape of a real alligator in order to come up with a good idea of the shapes we needed. We began with a pipe cleaner to create a skeleton. We filled out the skeleton using aluminum foil. At this point we voted for the best sculpture. The winning sculptor finished off their alligator using clay animation clay. I happen to think it turned out great!

The film crew learned quite a bit about claymation and potential claymation problems. They learned that next time they should laminate their set and be certain that it is secured to the table. If we had laminated the pond it would have prevented the clay from staining the pond. The kids found it pretty funny that after Alligreater ate the number 21, it left red marks on his teeth. They also learned the importance of keeping the camera still while taking the pictures. If they pressed too hard on the camera it caused a shaking effect.

The editors had a whole new experience. They had to export the photos from iphoto into imovie for the claymation portion of the movie. Our final movie uses about 200 still images all set to appear for 0.2 seconds. The students had to mess around with the voice over and the images in order to make sure Alligreater's mouth opened and closed at the right moment. My editing crew did an amazing job with this task.

My students think this happens to be their best movie this year. After the disappointment of the iVIE awards (and they took it hard) this was a great way to learn to get right back in the saddle and create something new and even more exciting. I am pretty proud of this class and what a memorable experience it has been to create all these movies with them this year.

Thank you to Project Live for supporting movie-making in the classroom. It has changed the lives of each and every student in my classroom this year.

Project #2- Alligreater the Alligator

We are going to try something new (and maybe a bit crazy). My kids really wanted to try to create a claymation movie. I told them that we will give it a try but my saying is, "Keep it simple." And boy, I really had to help them simplify their idea. They are such a creative bunch!

The main idea for our movie is to teach the concept of greater than and less than. The lesson is how to write the < or > symbol. The original idea had us comparing one digit, two digit, three digit, fractions, and number sentences. However, in order to "keep it simple" we are simply sticking with comparing two-digit numbers.

Here is the storyboard and the script. Hope you all enjoy!

Please note: The setting and our clay creature is in the drafting stage. They will be much more elaborate for the filming. :)

Please Don't Wrinkle Me Movie

I am so proud of my second graders! They took this idea and ran with it. From brainstorming, to videoing, to editing, their learning far surpassed my expectations. The original idea was for our movie to be a PSA but it ended up being a little bit longer than that (2 minutes 22 seconds). We think our movie is better suited with 2 minutes and

the final product sends a clear message.

We were wondering what you think of the background music? The volume of the music goes up and down. Does it perhaps do that too much?

Thank you for viewing and comments are welcome! We look forward to entering this movie in the iVIE!

Please Don't Wrinkle Me- Project 1

My students chose to focus on a topic that relates to Positive Action. We decided to do our movie as a PSA and plan to keep to the 60 second time frame. The idea of "wrinkling" comes from a lesson that I taught the students on the first day of school. I demonstrated how our feelings are like a piece of paper and every time you do or say something mean to another person it wrinkles them. I also showed them that even though they say sorry the wrinkle is still there and the wrinkle lasts forever. Ever since the first day of school my students remind each other not to wrinkle others.

As we brainstormed our movie, we watched several PSA movies. My students wanted to try a few new things. They wanted to try to do some voice overs, play with different shot sizes, and to do short repetitive clips to make our main idea clear. As you review the script and storyboard you will notice that there are a lot of clips; many of these clips are only 3-5 seconds.

We look forward to your feedback! Enjoy.

Clean Coyote Recycles!

Creating Clean Coyote Recycles! was a fun adventure for my second graders. We learned a lot about brainstorming ideas, writing the script, filming, lighting, acting, and most of all, editing. We are proud of what we have created as a team. We hope you enjoy it too!

Newbie Project Script and Storyboard

Here is the script and storyboard for the first newbie project. I have been working with my students to create this project. The basic idea for the movie is mine, but my students sequenced the storyboard and wrote the dialogue. This should be a fun adventure with my students and the famous... Clean Coyote!

Newbie Project Proposal

The topic for my public service announcement is “How can the Reidy Creek Coyotes make a difference in the world?” Our school has a recycling program and will be implementing the SAVE program this year. Although we currently have these programs, I would like to promote them to be more school-wide. The movie will star one of my students dressed in a coyote costume. He will be called “Mr. Green Coyote” (still working on that one). He will be a cape wearing coyote-hero who teaches the students at Reidy Creek how they can help save the earth by flying through the school and doing the following things… close the doors when the air conditioner is on, turn off the lights when he leaves the room, recycles his paper and plastic, and picks up trash from the ground. My hope is that students will learn that doing something small can make a big difference not only at Reidy Creek but in the world.
