Adding Dollars and Cents

This was a quick deal, experimenting using iMovie and still photos.  I like the focus on the steps to solving the math problem, and how quick it was to put it together.  Yet it still is interesting enough for the children to watch over again, over a course of days.  I will do this many times next year to introduce difficult math concepts.  I'm not sure yet how to change up the format to make it feel new every time.

Final Project

This was fun!  The children enjoyed putting together class-made costumes, and my "movie crew" were great at setting up, filming, and also breaking down the equipment for an easy clean-up (always a bonus in my book!).  The children also took ownership to the dialogue and editing process, altering any awkward dialogue and choosing appropriate sound effects.

Valentine's Day

valentinesday.movThis was super fun--we spent so much time on test preparation, this was a little break in the middle of it all, and the children really got a chance to express their individual style.  I chose the song "YMCA" by The Village People, an innocent pop song for the children to dance to.  My students are just super cute!

How to Count Money

Download file "How to Count Money the Movie.mov"This is a movie I made some time ago, but I just had not posted it to my blog.  I had fun with video and audio effects, and also a little blooper!

Rough Version of iVIE submission

I filmed and edited this version, with students co-writing and also starring.  Tomorrow I'm putting together a team to tweak the script tomorrow, then start filming the final version the day after.

Enjoy this version!

A simple video to introduce a writing topic

Here is a very simple movie of signs and buildings in my students' community, created as an introduction to a "thinking maps" circle map (and later writing) assignment.  I did have a clip of am/pm, but the owner came out and gave me a hard time about filming his store, so it ended up being too short to include!  Maybe he thought I was going to sue his place, or was working for "Cheaters"?!  Either way, he wasn't happy!

Christmas Sing-Along

Here's another installment in the holiday-themed movies I've been compiling for the kids.  Again, the tinsel mullet is put to great use and is thoroughly enjoyed by all!  Also, I accidentally added a sound effect at the end that extended into the "fade to black" part, and loved that effect.  A cool accident!

Thanksgiving

After the Halloween piece, I decided to make a 2-3 minute movie for each major holiday, and then compile on a CD at the end of the year to share with my students.  Here's our goofy turkey version of the Chicken Dance (the tinsel mullet in my box of costumes is getting a LOT of use this year--a favorite with several of the boys in my class!)

Halloween Chaos!

This was an experiment in use of sound effects.  You'll notice I totally went overboard, and loved it!

Next Project: Regrouping Girls

This is a "Cinderella" story I thought of earlier in the year.  Now that I'm teaching regrouping, it's the perfect time to make the movie!  Attached is our storyboard.

Newbie Project

I apologize for the poor sound quality and some unintelligible English, but I believe this little movie does get it's point across.  Enjoy!

Lemon Newbie Project

My newbie project digital storyboard is too large to post to my blog, so I am sending it directly to Frank Maggi.

Change of idea for First LIVE Project

Because of the time constraint of a 60-second piece, I am choosing a different idea and putting the others on the back burner:
Second Graders have to edit the long form of the date as part of the state standardized test, so I developed a short story line to practice this skill: (by the way, can you follow a colon with a statement and another colon? Just wondering!)
A student just finishes putting the long form of the date in correct order in a pocket chart and, satisfied with a job well-done, walks away. Then a little impish character sneaks up and mixes the parts of the date. The student soon returns to find his work undone and is shocked and upset. A friend arrives in the nick of time and talks the student through putting the parts of the date in correct order, from beginning to end.

Newbie Project

Second Graders often have difficulty learning how to regroup in double-digit addition. I would like to explain with childrens' voices different ways to regroup, with the storyline thread throughout being a child wanting to join the "regrouper" club (all members wearing a "regroup" badge and copping light serority girl attitudes), and not being invited because s/he cannot regroup. Then the regroup fairy appears and shows the student how to regroup. The story ends with the child being a part of the club with his/her "regrouper" badge. (I saw different ways to regroup on Houghton-Mifflin's website in their new math program, and got the e-mail address from a publisher rep to review the explanations in the teacher addition to help me write the script).
Second choice would teach how to divide into groups and also whole-into-parts in the same short movie. The story line would be a child who has 7 cookies to give to her friends, but she has 2 friends and is not sure how to share the cookies equally. First, the child and friends would figure out through discussion how divide the cookies into 2 equal groups of 3 each. Then, with the 1 leftover cookies, the child would break the cookie into two equal parts to share.

I look forward to any input/advice!
Thanks!!
