Project 3

For this IREADS project my students used the Sonic Pics application to create a story board. Each student read the story "Iceberg Rescue" by Sarah Amada. Then they had to create a story board explaining the story structure. Students discussed in teams of two who the main characters, setting, problem, steps to solve the solution, and the final solution. Then, each student had to evaluate the author's purpose in writing the story and share a "wondering" they had after reading the selection.
Using the Sonic PIcs application, students downloaded their profile picture, their favorite scene from the story, and an illustration detailing what they had learned. They recorded their story boards and evaluations over the pictures and downloaded it to the computer.
Overall, the students were very engaged in the process. They enjoyed using the multiple technology sources to complete this project. In a follow up formative assessment given to the class on the comprehension strategy "evaluate" each student correctly identified what was entertaining, informative or useful about the selection, and shared detailed information on what they had learned. All of these skills were directly addressed in this IREADS project.

IPOD Project Reflection

My students really enjoyed using the IPODS for this project. I had them use the IPODS in groups of three. First, they had to read through the story "The Golden Land" together. Then, they discussed their predictions and the strategy focus. Finally, they each had to ask two questions which they recorded on the IPOD. As a reflection, they answered each other's questions and discussed their predictions and what the author's purpose in writing the story was. I will upload the project as soon as I remember how to convert the WAV file to TIFF so I can upload it to this page!

Project 2 Recording

My 3rd graders will be reading a story from their leveled readers into the ipods. Our strategy for this selection is to Ask Questions. They will record their questions into the ipod focusing on the strategic questioning strategies and how well the author presented the information in the text. Were they able to learn something new? And if so, what? Then they will swap the Ipod with a buddy and listen to each others reading and questions. They have to write a response to their partner answering the questions.

IPOD project

My IPOD project focused on the the comprehension skill of summarizing. First, the students had to read the story into the IPOD to hear their fluency. Then, using a class created rubric they determined if they were ready to write a summary of the story they had read. They worked in teams of three to record in sequence what happened in the beginning, middle and end of each story. After the team was finished, we listened to the recording as a class to determine whether the team gave a sufficient summary. If as summary lacked something, the team had to return to the IPOD and re-do their project. Overall, this project was easier than the podcast for my class. They really enjoyed using the IPOD touch.

Garage Band

My Garage Band project has two objectives. The first is to increase reading fluency by having students record their reading of a story. The next objective is for my students to create a podcast on the different questioning strategies (QAR) we have been learning in class. Students will be divided into teams and each team will be in charge of creating a podcast for each question type- Right There, Think and Search, Author and Me, and On My Own. Students will share their projects which each other and use them to correctly categorize questions given in class.

First Ideas

I plan to take pictures of the phonics library books my students are reading, upload them to keynote, then have students use garage band to to record summaries using the comprehension skills they have been learning in class.
