Reading Comprehension-Summarizing:
Scaffolded for ELL and Struggling readers-
Every selection should be summarized to build comprehension for ELL and Struggling readers.
Suggestions:
• Class summarizes together recent selection in HMR anthology. Teacher records on chart paper. Class chorally reads summary.
• Teacher creates keynote with summarization and picture support. *First technology goal- Student will record audio on keynote of their voice reading the summary.
• OR Teacher creates keynote with all pictures for story on one page, and sentences on another page. Students have to sequence pictures and sentences.
• Then after sequencing, students use class summary and teacher selected pictures to create keynote and records voice. Student reviews their own keynote with self guiding rubric.
• Teacher reviews student’s keynote for comprehension and spoken language using rubric.
Picture ideas:
Students draw pictures then scan or use digital camera
Scan pictures from selection
Take a picture of the selection pictures with digital camera or photo booth software

Teaching keynote:
1. Intro sample comprehension
2. Recording audio to sample keynote
3. Moving objects in keynote
4. Add slide to keynote
5. Copy and paste pictures and text to slides
6. Write original text to slide
7. Search for pictures to import to slide, take pictures with photo booth or digital camera, or student drawing to download into keynote.
