SEM-R ProjectLIVE

We have had many questions asking about SEM-R. We decided to explain it through a movie. We believe that all classrooms should be doing this.

Since this has so much voice over, it was a good thing we had refined our storyboard.

We tried to get our narrator walking, and the wheelchair we used to hold the camera had a couple of flat spots, which gave us a few bumps. Ergh!
My students were wondering about what types of transitions to put in, if any.

Here is the storyboard in progress.

I really like the kids telling their stories and experiences. They could speak a little slower in a couple of places so their words are more clear. As for transitions, I would fit them in between the different types of activities you do for SEM-R. Perhaps some of the names of the activities with what it stands for in SEM-R can fly in or or out to accent exactly what they are doing. As for the bumps...I think you may need to shoot it again but have the camera in front so that you don't have to turn the camera and get the jostling whenever you need to get the student back in the center of the picture.

Chia, I think the way the kids are showcased throughout this movie is outstanding. It's such a clear presentation of the process, and the comments of the kids seem to come from the heart. The "bumps" were not distracting to me, I think because the camera work and dialogue were both so interesting. I am assuming there is more editing to be done from the computer section on, but the beginning is first rate!

I love the beginning of the movie - the camera angles were interesting and well done. You've had a lot more experience doing this than I have so I'm sure you know to tighten it up so it's faster paced. I know with editing your kids will do this. Can't wait to see the finished product. It makes me want to learn more about SEM-R. Nice job!

I think the wheelchair worked great. I can see where the early time spent storyboarding would be a big time-saver over all. Since I listened with headphones on, it was obvious when the lav mic was used because all of the sound came out of one side. In FCP, you can quickly fix that by selecting any tracks needing it and choosing Modify > Audio > Pan to Center. Just a quibble. Very nice work.

Chia, I especially enjoyed the topic as I was at the first training on the SEM-R project. I think this would be to share with parents and new teachers. The kids are easy to understand and I like the different the different shots. My husband just came in from the other room and said "what's that about Riedy Creek?" "I sounds good." So I'd say your audio is great.
