5th Grade Trip Across America Lesson

This lesson was designed for 5th grade, but is easily adaptable for grades 4th - 7th. It combines the 5th grade HSS standard requiring students to know the location of the states and capitals, with the math standards in developing computation skills with decimals. Students will need to plan a road trip across America with their family. Individuals or teams will decide where to begin and end, traveling from one capital city to the next. They then use Mapquest to calculate the distance from city to city. After gathering the data, students will input the information into a Numbers spreadsheet and create formulas to calculate the mileage, gallons of gas, cost and number of days the trip will take. Finally, students will locate photographs of their route and create a photo collage of their trip. Extension activities are included to find and calculate costs of food and motels for the trip.

Math 5 NS 2.1 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide with decimals; Math 5 MR 3.3 Develop generalizations of the results obtained and apply them in other circumstances;
HSS 5 5.9 Students know the location of the current 50 states and the names of their capitals.
