Passwords - Standardize them to simplify

Keeping up with passwords for accounts is a real challenge. One way to make it a little easier is to standardize your passwords. The first step is to look at the most restrictive password you have and then make that password the same for all of your school accounts (perhaps something different for your home accounts). Experts suggest that you have a more complicated password, so that students, etc. cannot figure it out. Some suggestions for crafting a good password include,
  • minimum of eight characters
  • use numbers and other characters
  • use upper case and lower case
  • do not have it spell a word, name, birthdate, or other personal info
  • can chose a phrase (or just the first letters of that phrase); add other characters for increased security

The steps below are illustrated on the attachment: Password Help
- GroupWise email (minimum 4 characters) - Options > Password
- Google Apps (minimum 6 characters) - Mail > Settings > Accounts > Google Account Settings > Change Password
- PowerSchool - Setup > Personalize (it is suggested that you have 8 characters)
- Edusoft - Admin > Settings (case sensitive, 6-20 characters)
- School laptop - put in a help desk ticket to get this changed
- School network account - put in a help desk ticket to get this changed. Choose "unsure" for problem type (or call Ext. 150). Request to have them check the box that allows you to "have your password reset at next login"

iOS_4_update

For all of your student iPods, you'll probably want to do a Restore and Update. This will erase all content from the iPod and install the new OS.
After updating all of them, you would then be able to start "setting up the rules" for playlists and photo albums for each of the iPods.
In the video you'll learn the steps you'll need to take to quickly update your iPods.

I DO NOT recommend this method for your personal iPhone or iPod touch. For your personal device, just do the Update, but NOT the Restore.

Sound Effect Library

If your work here at EUSD ever requires legal sound effects for some multi-media project, we have access to a large, 10-volume collection from Sony Pictures. You'll have to take a trip down to the Carolyn Gilbert Education Center (in the Technology and Media area)to get the effects you need, but it's free, legal, and high quality.

If you want to preview what's in the collection, you can see the entire contents here:

There is also a little tutorial on how to easily find the sound effect you need quickly (they've been loaded into iTunes on the one machine they are loaded onto for easy searching).

Historical Maps

Historical Maps - from around the world

Historic maps for students & teachers

Welcome to ETC's collection of historic maps. Here you will find over 5,000 maps representing many different time periods. A friendly license allows teachers and students to use up to 25 maps in non-commercial school projects without further permission. All maps are available as GIF or JPEG files for screen display as well as in PDF for printing. Use the GIF or JPEG maps for classroom presentations and student websites. Use the PDF maps for displays, bulletin boards, and printed school reports.

Groupwise to EUSD GMail

Sending Groupwise email over to your EUSD GMail Account

You can also choose to have all of your Groupwise email forwarded to your EUSD Google GMail. This PDF explains how. Note: It is important that at this time all EUSD employees use the Groupwise account as their primary work email source. The EUSD Google GMail can be a supplement, but not a replacement for that at this time.

Groupwise

Sending EUSD GMail email over to your Groupwise Account

You can also do it the other way. Watch this movie to find out how.

EUSD Google GMail to Groupwise

Note: There is a text below that describes what the movie here shows.

Watch to see how it's done:

GMail

With your EUSD Google Apps account, you automatically get an EUSD GMail account too. This is not currently a replacement for your eusd4kids email; most people don’t use it at all.

But you still may get mail there. For example if someone shared a document with you or included you in a Calendar event, they may have opted to email you a notice. That notice would go to your EUSD GMail account.

You don’t have to go looking for mail in your EUSD Google account that may or may not be there. Instead, you can have the GMail forwarded to your eusd4kids account. Here’s how.

  1. Login to your EUSD Google account. Notice how your user name automatically has appended your EUSD GMail address.
  2. Click on Email.
  3. Choose Settings in the top right part of the screen.
  4. Enable the forwarding link and enter your eusd4kids address
  5. Choose what you want done with the EUSD GMail copy of the mail
    • Keep a copy in your EUSD Google In Box
    • Archive any forwarded mail in your EUSD GMaill account
    • Delete the mail from EUSD GMail after it’s been forwarded

Be sure to Save Changes

That’s it; now whenever any mail is sent to your EUSD GMail account, you’ll receive a copy of it in your EUSD4Kids email account.

Exporting Full Quality from iMovie 09 and iMovie HD

In iMovie HD ('06), you have an option for Share > QuickTime > Full Quality. You don't have that option in iMovie '09, but you can still do it pretty easily. You would use these settings if you wanted a copy of the original movie that is just as good as the original footage (little compression). This would not be appropriate for posting to the web. Here's how to get a Full Quality Export in iMovie '09 (and '08).

Making Bookmarks in Microsoft Word

Bookmarks can work like anchors do on a web page. You can make links to various locations in a document. Here's how.

Exporting for the Web with iMovie 09

This movie will show you how to get a good web version of your movies. When you do this, iMovie '09 makes .m4v version that usually opens in iTunes, ready for syncing with an iPod. If it's to be used on the web, it's a good idea to change that to .mp4 so that it will open in a browser (and not download to iTunes). The movie shows you how.

Exporting from iMovie HD for the Web

This movie shows you one way to get a reasonably good export of a movie for showing on the web. You can also use this method to Export from iMovie '09 (the interface looks a little different, but the procedure is the same). Or you can use this technique.
